How to Style Coordinating Winter Family Outfits

Whether we like it or not, winter is officially here in Canada. While it’s not necessarily my favourite season of the year, it definitely contains many of my favourite dates in the year. We’ve got Christmas and New Years, definitely two of the most special times of the year and then Chris’ birthday in mid-January which always gives us something to look forward to in those cold and dark winter months.

Another thing that I absolutely love about the winter season is the first official snowfall. I’m not talking about the first time we see a couple flecks in the sky, I mean the first REAL snowfall when there’s enough snow to have a snowball fight or build a snowman. When the snow covers the earth with a pure, white blanket. It’s so beautiful and magical.

And that’s exactly the kind of snowfall we experienced the day we went out to take pictures of our family winter outfits from the North Country collection, part of the brand house mySTYLE at Giant Tiger. During the first major snowfall of this season, we hopped into the van and drove to a nearby estate (one of Canada’s finest and last remaining grand estates) and had a family photoshoot!

Dressing my family in coordinating outfits has become something I absolutely LOVE doing…and while my kids will still tolerate dressing like their mom or dad, I figure I might as well take advantage of it while I can! But if you’ve ever tried to dress boys and girls in matching outfits with their Dad who is 6’2″ and a momma who is a plus size, you will quickly find out that it’s almost impossible! Most retailers do not carry that large of a range for the whole family in coordinating outfits.

That’s why I was super impressed to find the North Country collection at Giant Tiger that spanned ALL THE SIZES – from baby to plus size and everything in between!

I started with the boys, because they are usually the easiest to coordinate. I found the blue and black plaid collard shirts and knew it was the perfect launching point. Paired with shirts with woodland creatures on them and then various knit toques and mitts from the same collection, the boys are ready for their first snowball fight! Also included was a pair of lined black lace up boots that is perfect for nicer occasions or shopping around the town.

Now to match up the boys with their Dad was going to be somewhat of a challenge, but when shopping in the same collection, it was easy peasy lemon squeezy. We found a coordinating blue and red plaid shirt and layered it with a gray waffle shirt underneath. We also ended up finding a beautiful (can you say beautiful when it’s men’s clothing?!) knit sweater with deer on it that is perfect for this time of year. It’s probably a good time to mention that almost all the pieces we are wearing are under $30, with the one exception being Chris’ knit sweater at $35, which is still a steal of a deal.

Now came the most challenging outfit of them all – coordinating my daughter who is in kids sizes with me, who is a plus size. I have so many moms reach out to me asking where I find my clothing and especially so whenever I find matching outfits with my daughter – so momma’s take notes! As I mentioned, all of these pieces are from the North Collection at Giant Tiger which is easily identifiable by the price tags attached to the clothing. Each different collection at the store has their own unique name and coordinating color making it really easy to identify in each section (mens, womens, childrens).

For both my daughter and I, I was able to find matching red and black buffalo check shirts (both with matching hoods on them too). Even more surprising was that I was able to find the exact matching blue, red and white leggings! My daughter thought it was SO COOL to have the exact match to mommy’s outfit! I won’t lie, I think it’s pretty fabulous too! Finishing the look off with coordinating toques, I’d say we are winter ready!

I do want to make a quick note here that if you aren’t a plus sized momma, not to worry. The North Country collection is also available in regular women’s sizes as well!

Dressing the whole family in matching outfits is so much fun, especially at this time of year. Making sure you don’t break the bank trying to do so is key, as well as making sure you can find sizes for the whole family. Giant Tiger has your family covered, helping you look your best and save some extra money so you can spend it other things this time of year.
