    Modern Superhero Boys Room Makeover: One Room Challenge Week 3

    Welcome to Week 3 of the One Room Challenge. If you are new here, we are participating in an online home decor challenge where we have six weeks to complete one room makeover. There’s no prize, but it is a lot of fun to renovate a space on a deadline while following along as hundreds of other designers do so as well online (and document it all). If you want to check out what the other designers are doing, make sure to check out the One Room Challenge blog!

    We are making over our boys shared bedroom into a modern superhero theme. If you missed the first two weeks, you can catch up here: Week 1 – Inspiration and Week 2 – BEFORE pictures

    This week was all about PAINT! As a self-made designer (meaning I have zero formal training), it’s always fascinated me just how much a can of paint can transform a space. People often think you need to spend thousands of dollars on furniture, lighting and knick knacks to makeover a space, but you really don’t. I mean, don’t get me wrong – those things ALL contribute to creating a beautiful space, but many times, just painting a fresh coat of paint on the walls can totally transform a space. We are working on a number of home renovation projects all at the same time (which we will share about more in the coming weeks) but I can’t even tell you the difference I’ve seen in just painting a white PRIMER on our dark wood stairs has made! We haven’t even gotten to the good, quality paint and the entire front entry already feels transformed.

    But alas, I digress – we will share more about the front entry later. Today we are talking about the paint in the boys room. We have partnered up with Valspar Paints and we are excited to share with you what we did.

    It wasn’t that long ago that I thought painting anything white was boring. Now, just about every wall in our starts off white with perhaps some kind of accent. I like white paint SO much now that just the other day my five year old son told me he was going to buy me white paint for my birthday! #truestory!

    So for the boys room, we knew that we wanted to start off white and then design at least one feature wall with the colours from our mood board. I also knew I wanted some geometric patterns in the space and so we decided on triangles for the feature wall (if you’ve watched my Instagram stories this week, you’ll know that I will come to regret the decision of triangles and we are actually changing it, but for the purposes of this post, I still want to share this beautiful feature wall with you to remember it!)

    Since being in our new home, we’ve painted mostly with Valspar paint and we’ve become big fans. In particular, we used their Signature collection for the first time and LOVED it! If you’ve worked with paint before, you know that you actually CAN tell a BIG difference when working with higher quality paint. Everything about it is better – it goes on smoother, dries faster, goes further and usually always has minimal to no smell.

    We painted white on three of the four walls and even decided to paint the ceiling too to freshen it up. For the feature wall, we nailed in small nails at either ends of the wall and then attached a chalk line to help us “snap” on a straight line for our angles. Then we tapped everything off and went to work on painting! I have NEVER painted black on a wall before but let me tell you, this Valspar Signature went on beautifully! I was so worried that the coverage wouldn’t be great and that we’d end up having to do more than two coats, but that was not the case! Even after one coat, the coverage was already pretty even, but we still went ahead and did a second and it honestly look flawless! Super impressed!

    The colours that we used in this space are:

    White = Ultra White

    Black = Deep Well

    Grey = Vessel Grey

    Yellow = Sunny Jonquil

    Well there you have it friends, our Week 3 update on the boys room. Like I said above, once this was painted and we started building the furniture, we quickly realized our feature wall WAS NOT going to work – so we’ve actually already repainted it. It will look similar, but different – you’ll just have to come back and see how we change it up!

    Until next week…

    Love & Blessings,

    Christine
