Late last winter, my family and I were invited to go up to Deerhurst Resort in the Muskoka’s for a little getaway. Fresh off the sandy beaches of Florida, we headed to the snow covered forest in Huntsville for a few days away. But as we transitioned from the hot temperatures to the wet and damp climate of the north (which is not typical for that time of year), we all ended up getting sick while visiting the resort. Add to that, the week after we returned, my grandma passed away and we were back on the road to be with our extended family.
By the time we regrouped, the snow had melted away and we were now into Spring and I still hadn’t done my review for Deerhurst and felt terrible about it. They were super gracious and told me not to worry, but being a person of my word, I wanted to make sure I did my review to share with all of you.
So I asked if I could hold off and wait until the following winter season to share because honestly, Deerhurst is a fabulous family winter getaway! Despite us all being sick (quite literally my daughter fell asleep right at the dinner table in the restaurant one night), and despite the unseasonably warm temperatures that caused us to have to change some of the activities last minute, we still had a fabulous time away. So I wanted to take a few minutes today to share with you our experience and encourage any of you that are looking for a little winter getaway to check out Deerhurst!
They also have the same promotion going on as last year, which I did talk about here, where you get a 15% discount when you book a midweek stay before March 15th for the family. You can find all the details about their special here.
So let’s get to it!
Deerhurst Resort is located about two hours north of Toronto in Huntsville, ON. It is an all-seasons family resort with a lake right in it’s backyard. It’s known as Muskoka’s Winter Wonderland with so many amazing activities for the whole family to enjoy.
Let’s start inside the resort. We had a two bedroom suite, two bathroom suite, which was absolutely massive! I was so impressed with the size and how spacious it was. A kitchen, dining room, living room with a fireplace and balcony were also part of the suite. It is the perfect spot for a larger family to vacation!
If you choose to skip out on the cooking for a couple meals while there, the main building has three restaurants to offer your family tons of variety for dining. (Note, there is a fourth restaurant that is open during the summer/fall season). We had breakfast brunch both mornings we were there which was served on a massive buffet, overlooking a beautiful field where you can often spot deer running through. It was spectacular. For lunch, we ate at the Maple pub and for dinner we enjoyed dining at Compass. The food was seriously some of the best we’ve had at any hotel or resort, they had tons of options for kids and they were super accommodating for our son’s food allergies.
Also inside that main building was an entire wing for the kids to enjoy. A massive indoor pool as well as a rock climbing room and an arcade were available for anyone to enjoy. They were also doing a little bit of construction to add in a few more family-friendly features. We spent a lot of time in the pool and they kids had an absolute blast rock climbing!
Outside, there are so many tremendous activities that Deerhurst offers. By far the highlight for the family was the kids snowmobiling. I was shocked when they said the two older kids could learn to snowmobile (they were five and six years old at the time) and yet in less than 20 minutes, both of them were zipping around the snow as the sun was starting to set in the distance. It was truly a moment I won’t soon forget!
The next day, we had the opportunity to go on a horse-drawn sleigh ride around the property and see some farm animals near by. It’s really a beautiful spot up there and I would highly recommend that if you go, to take a ride on the sleigh to really see the property and surrounding area. It’s like a little slice of winter magic!
As I mentioned, it was really warm when we went (for a Canadian winter) so the snow was starting to melt like crazy. Because of that, we weren’t able to skate on the Arrowhead Trail, which was unfortunate, but considering we were all quite sick, it turned out just fine in the end. But with that said, I’d still love the opportunity to check out that trail because it looks amazing!
Overall, we had such a great few days away at Deerhurst Resort. Despite being sick and the weather not being the greatest, we managed to make the most of it and create some pretty magical memories.
If you are looking for a family getaway this winter, definitely make sure to checkout Deerhurst. The location is ideal, the grounds are immaculate, the amenities perfect for a family and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. I know we can’t wait to go back!
Love & Blessings,
