As many of you know by now, my middle son as well as myself, struggle with eczema. While I’ve never been officially diagnosed with it nor do I have it present all over my body, I have had bad flare ups throughout most of my life, including a recent one this past summer.
For my son, his story is a little different. I’ve shared it before but let me quickly recap his eczema journey.
It all started when he was three months old. We noticed that the cradle cap on his head wasn’t really going away. Our daughter had had it but it wasn’t as persistent as Gabriel’s was. Then came what we thought was the baby acne. Again, we had seen this with our daughter and after a few weeks, it cleared up.
But with our son, it wasn’t clearing up. In fact, it was spreading and getting worse. The cradle cap had gotten so bad that most of the hair on the top of his head had fallen out as we tried to get rid of the scaling but the hair on the back of his head was perfectly fine, standing straight up in the air. It looked really odd and so around four months old, we really didn’t have much of a choice and shaved the rest of his hair to try and even out the look a bit better.
It was all around this time that he also started not sleeping. He was a bit of a fussy baby and didn’t like to sleep anywhere except in our arms for naps. But this was now starting to happen at night as well and he started to scream and cry un-relentlessly. This would continue on for months, all while his skin was getting worse and worse.
I had taken him in to see a variety of doctors…all of whom prescribed something different for his skin, yet none of which worked. I can remember in a desperate plea for help reaching out to my friends on Facebook and asking them for their recommendations. We tried just about everything!
It was finally after his skin started oozing all over his body that I took him back to our family doctor for the third time, dumped all the medications we had tried out onto the table and said I had no idea what to do. The doctor wasn’t very helpful as he had no idea at that point either.
It was after that that we would eventually get referred to a dermatologist and once we saw her everything started changing for our little guy.
But I can’t help but think how different those first six months of his life and subsequently our lives too would have been had we had relief for his skin right away.
That’s why I’m SO glad that there are more and more amazing products coming to market like Dermakalm. What makes Dermakalm so special is that unlike many other eczema creams, it is available in a formulation that can be used on babies as young as eight weeks old according to (Dermakalm Eczema for Infants and Children)! That’s incredible! I can remember one of the things our family doctor would constantly say when going through various product options is that almost all of them weren’t suitable for a baby that young. So there was really no other choice for our little guy but to suffer through it.
Well, thankfully, babies don’t have to endure that anymore with Dermakalm. This product is developed with dermatologists to temporarily relieve symptoms of eczema, like itching, red spots, dry skin, scaling, oozing, abrasions and hardening of the skin in both adults and children alike. It’s also non-greasy, free of corticosteroids, fragrances, parabens and artificial colouring, which most of those are found in many other products that are marketed for patients with eczema.
Thankfully, my son doesn’t struggle with eczema like he once did but that doesn’t mean his skin is perfect by any means. We find that he still has certain areas on his body that are affected by eczema, especially in the summer heat. We’ve started using Dermakalm on those problem areas and can already see a difference. Just a thin layer of the cream a few times a day and we can see it working.
For myself, I’ve been having flare ups on my face this summer and I’ve found the cream very effective at relieving the dry and irritated areas.
So if you or someone you know, especially a child or infant is struggling with eczema, I would 100% recommend giving this product a try. There is no need to suffer with eczema, especially for babies now thanks to Dermakalm!
