We pack lunches for our kids every single day. EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. We always start the year off with cute sandwich cutouts and love notes but then somewhere mid-winter, that excitement for lunch making takes a less-exciting turn and just about anything you find in your refrigerator will do.
I think part of the reason for the downward spiral with lunch making is because of our lack of inspiration. It’s hard to stay inspired day after day after day with what to feed your kids. Even harder to make sure your kids are eating healthy lunch options in our increasingly busy schedules.
One of the ways that I’ve found to stay inspired and keep the kids eating well while at school, is to get them involved in the lunch making process. Even though they are still young, they can definitely put their minds and hands to work to come up with something fun and creative. Haven’t you noticed that kids are more likely to eat something that they have created?!
Recently, we partnered with Maple Lodge Farms for their #FamilyFirst event, where I was able to bring the two older kids down to a culinary school for a day filled with family fun! We were able to learn all about Maple Lodge Farms’ values of feeding your family good, natural and clean food straight from the farm. Being family owned and operated for the last 60 years, this company knows and understands family values.
Part of the event was to bring your family together and create a unique sandwich, using some of the new Naturally From The Farm products, including hickory smoked chicken bacon, oven roasted chicken, black garlic and peppercorn and jalapeño chicken breast deli slices.
My kids had an absolute blast crafting and creating those unique sandwiches! My daughter created a Shopkins-style “Love Connection” sandwich using nutella, strawberries, mango and chicken bacon! The sweet and savoury factor was on point!
Then my son and I came up with the idea of mini Lego sandwiches. He is obsessed with Lego right now and the idea of making sandwiches that look like them, was incredibly exciting for him. We did end up using quite a bit of food dye and gummy bears, but in the end, our “Legolicious” creation was something that we will always remember!
Packing lunches does NOT have to be boring. It can be fun and exciting and an event that brings the whole family together. It can also be a time to really let your kids’ creativity come to life. Using Maple Lodge Farms’ wholesome and natural ingredients, you know that your kids are not only getting a fun and happy lunch, but a healthy and wholesome one too!
