I’m not one who particularly loves the idea of setting a bunch of New Years Resolutions. I find there is too much hype in New Years resolutions and quite frankly, without a plan in place for those resolutions, they are simply just nice dreams that won’t ever come to pass.
But I am the kind of person who is very goal-driven. So whenever the new year rolls around, I usually find myself setting “goals” that I want to try to accomplish rather than “resolutions” of things I hope to change. Make sense? I find that a goal is something I can work towards all throughout the year. There is a plan in place on how I will achieve it and I am constantly referring to that plan to make sure that I am on the right path to achieving that goal. Rather than with a resolution where I can resolve to loose weight and get healthy but by March, I’m elbow deep into a bag of chips because I didn’t have a plan, just wishful thinking.
So with that said, I wanted to share with you my five personal goals for 2016. I’ve actually created a few different sets of goals: personal, family and blogging goals. Today, I will share my personal ones with you, really as an act of accountability but maybe as a source of inspiration. Maybe you haven’t been able to nail down what your goals are for this New Year and perhaps my list will inspire you to create your own set of goals. Even if it’s just two goals, I really strongly believe that everyone should set forth to accomplish something this year in their own personal lives. To always be trying to better themselves, in order to better the world around them.
Top Five Personal Goals:
1. Get Healthy
This is a BIG one for me. While this last year has been a journey towards emotional health, I have to admit that my physical health has taken a major backseat. As hard as it is to admit, I find myself at the heaviest I’ve ever weighed (pregnant or not) and the most out of shape I’ve ever been. We have lots of stairs in our home and going from the basement to the top floor nearly kills me…and that’s not good.
As I’ve focused so much on the blog this year, I realized that much of my life is lived sitting down, on the computer, working away. While that’s been great for the blog, my health has definitely suffered from it.
But furthermore, for the last six years of my life, I’ve either been pregnant or breastfeeding. My body has gone through DRAMATIC changes, time and time again, over six years. And I can definitely feel the affects of having had three children, in a short amount of time, and gaining and loosing and gaining and loosing and gaining the weight back again. Now that we are DONE having children, it’s time that I loose it all for GOOD! It’s time that I start putting my health back as a priority.
I’ve decided that I’m going to be video journaling my weight loss journey as a source of accountability but also inspiration. I would love it if you joined me on this health journey!
2. Be More Focused
This one is not so much a tangible goal but rather a state of mind that I desperately need to achieve. I wrote about how FOCUS is my word for 2016 here.
Again, referring to this last year, I found that I was quite often scattered in my thinking, my lack of planning and therefore my life. So many distractions would get my attention and often I found that I would waste time on things that weren’t of great importance (um…Facebook).
This year, it’s time to focus. I need to plan my days better…from planning my blogs, to my meals to my time with the kids. Planning will help bring about better focus. So maybe that’s the goal…be a better planner!
3. Be a Better Mom
Ok, I know this one might prompt you to say, “But you are a great Mom…don’t be so hard on yourself.” I know I am a good Mom, I just want to be a BETTER Mom than I was this last year.
I want to focus more time on my kids and be distracted less. That means less phone/computer time while the kids are around, which will mean less screen time for them. They are only going to be this young once and I don’t want to miss moments because I’m too distracted with work.
I also need to work on my patience with the kids. Especially with my older two, they seem to already know at such a young age, exactly how to push my buttons! I need to learn to breath more before I respond!
4. Be Intentional
This is a big one. I find that without intentionality, life can become very empty and lonely. Everyone’s lives are busy. We all know that and yet we still often fail to be intentional about spending time with friends and family.
This year, we’ve come up with a list of 20 families that we want to be intentional with. We want to deepen our friendships with them and spend more face time together.
But this isn’t just about being intentional with people, although that’s a huge part of it, it’s about being intentional with just about everything in my life. From my health to my time…it plays back into my three previous goals perfectly. Be intentional with my health, with my time and as a Mom.
5. Spiritual Growth
Is it just me or does it seem that the busier you get, the easier it is to put off spiritual growth?! Or when things start going really well in your life, it just seems easier to be less and less dependant on God. And that’s unfortunately what happened with me this last year.
So going forward in 2016, I need to make my spiritual growth a priority, especially if I want to model that for my kids (which I obviously do). This really is a life goal actually and will likely always make my New Years top five goals every year.
So there you have it, my goals for 2016. What about you? What are your goals? What are areas you want to focus on this coming year? Let me know in the comments down below! Let’s tackle these together!
