Living Room Makeover: One Room Challenge – Upgrading Your Light Situation Week 4

It’s hard to believe that we are already in week FOUR of the One Room Challenge! I’m going to try and not focus on the fact that there are only two weeks left in the challenge, cause that *might* cause a slight freak out with how much is still left to be done!

If you are new here this week, let’s catch you up to speed on what’s been happening the last few weeks leading up to this. Week 1, I shared the design inspiration for the space. Week 2, you got to see the ugly ‘before’ pictures. Last week, I showed you how to make a feature wall and shared our paint color for the space.

So now that you are caught up to speed, let’s get into today’s post, which is all about upgrading your light switches. You might be sitting there thinking that’s not really an essential part in a room makeover, but let me tell you something, it can be the littlest detail that makes all the difference.

Chris has been talking about upgrading our light switches since we bought our very first home. He used to always talk about how ‘switching’ every switch would add value into our home. If I’m totally honest, most times he would talk about it, I’d just roll my eyes. Seemed like way too much work (if you consider how many switches are in your entire home) with little reward. I also had never really understood what a beautiful light switch could look like, let alone what it could do for a space.

Fast forward to this last Fall and Legrand reached out to me to see if I’d like to swap out some light switches and plugs in a few rooms in our home. I KNEW hubby would flip his switch for this and said yes immediately! I also knew we would be redoing the living room for the ORC and figured it would be the perfect ‘detail’ addition to the space.

So let me talk to you for a few minutes about the adorne Collection by Legrand and why I’ve been 100% converted to believing that swapping out your switches and plugs can make a world of a difference.

So what’s so special about this collection, you might ask? We are talking about switches that dim, plugs that pop out and lighting that responds to a slight tap on your smartphone! These are some of the world’s most innovative light switches that all come in the most stylish and modern packages. Say goodbye to ugly screws on your wall plates and hello to smart charging solutions! With dozens upon dozens of options to choose from when it comes to the switch, the plug and the wall plate, you truly get customizable lighting solutions throughout your home!

Let me tell you about the adorne Collection by Legrand switches and plugs we put in on our main level (which includes the living room). For starters, the main switches we changed out for the Softap Switch. We debated back and forth which switches we wanted, but in the end, I still liked the idea of physically clicking something, especially for the kids sake. I felt like they still needed something that they could touch to turn off the lights as a good reminder. We paired those with the 1-Gang Wall plate in Powder White. I absolutely loved the powder white option as opposed to the glossy options, which all other regular light switches seem to be. Something about the flat white makes it look really modern and super chic.

As I said with this collection, you can really build and customize exactly what you need for your switches. We wanted one dimmer in our kitchen above the island, so we were able to incorporate a Paddle Dimmer Switch to the mix and we absolutely love having the dimmer ability as part of that switch.

When it came to the plugs, we had a little bit of a heartbreaking discovery. We had originally ordered the 1-Gang Pop-Out Plugs that have three plugs built into it. We absolutely loved the way these looked and liked the idea of having an additional plug in all our outlets. However, much to our dismay, once we went to install the plugs, we realized that all of the electrical outlets that the plug sits in were too shallow! Every. single. one! I have no idea why ours are so shallow (although I can venture a guess that it has something to do with a cheap builder problem) but alas, we had to return all of them and choose again.

For most of the plugs, we went with the Plus Size Outlet. After reading the dimensions, we realized that one would fit well into our shallow boxes. We also loved the more modern look over just a regular plug, not to mention how amazing they look once the wall plate is mounted on it!

For a number of the plugs in our kitchen and office, we decided to go with the Dual-USB outlet and let me tell you – GAME CHANGER! I actually don’t know why ALL plugs aren’t built with this as a standard these days, but with the amount of devices our family chargers everyday, these plugs are perfect! Not only does it take away the bulky brick that is normally the part that plugs into the outlet, it also frees up an outlet. You can charge two USB at the same time as having two items plugged into the same outlet! Talk about efficiency!

When it comes to making over a space, it really is the smallest details that can make all the difference, but often times, people overlook plugs and switches because the truth is, they aren’t that glamorous or exciting. But after having installed these in our space I can say with confidence that they DO make ALL the difference! When the four year old is showing his friends how cool the new light switches are, you know it’s a big deal!

So next time you are upgrading your space, make sure to check out the adorne Collection by Legrand. With so many options to choose from, you’ll soon be wanting to swap out all the switches and plugs in your home!
