Custom Floral Dishware DIY with Temporary Tattoos

I love celebrating different holidays throughout the year. From the big ones like Christmas and Thanksgiving to the smaller ones like Valentine’s and Canada Day, they are all cause for celebration in our home.

But I’ve found that over the years, as much as I’d love to make a big deal and go all out for each of them, time and money don’t always allow for that. We don’t have a lot of storage in our current home so we’ve also found that we can’t keep a lot of seasonal items on hand for only a couple of weeks worth of use in our home. If we are going to keep something, it’s because it gets maximum exposure! And I know we aren’t the only ones living with the need for less.

But I’m just like everyone else and when I see all the holiday-themed decor at the stores, I get all excited and want to immediately scoop it up and take it home. Restrain is a skill I’ve had to learn how to master the last couple of years.

So while I don’t necessarily go all out with Valentine’s day or Easter decor, it doesn’t mean I can’t still do a couple special things that will make the celebration memorable.

For this Valentine’s Day, Chris and I have decided to stay in (because we will just be coming back from a big trip) and have a quiet dinner at home, once the kids are in bed. So I’ve been thinking up a few ways that I can make it extra special from our ordinary dinner date’s at home.

And that’s when I came up with these gorgeous and oh-so-easy custom floral dishware DIY, made with temporary tattoos! That’s right, this gorgeous design that you see on these thrifted plates and mugs are TATTOOS! Who would have thought, right?!

This has got to be one of the easiest yet most beautiful DIY’s I’ve done on a very small budget. Let me break it down.

The paid of white plates and mugs all came from the thrift store for a total of $5. I then purchased these gorgeous floral tattoos that came in a set of five from Amazon for less than $10. I peeled off the back, placed it face down on the dish, held a wet cloth on it and waited about 20 seconds (just like you would if placing it on your body). I let the tattoo dry and then used this dishwasher safe Mod Podge that I already had on hand to seal the tattoo using a sponge brush. I then baked it in the oven at 350 degrees for 30 minutes and that was it! It’s THAT simple!

I absolutely love the way they turned out! What’s great about this DIY is that first of all, it’s completely customizable! I mean think of all the temporary tattoos out there you could use! No two dishes have to look the same again! Secondly, I love the idea of how simple this is to turn items that you already have in your home or even thrifted items into holiday decor that you can reuse for other occasions too. Thirdly, I think these would also make the most perfect hostess gift! Think about all the applications you could use it for – vases, planters, dessert plates, you name it! The options are endless!
