    DIY Fall Hoop Wreath

Summer seems to have come to a pretty abrupt halt here in the Greater Toronto Area this week with all the kids going back to school and the temps so cold that jacket and long pants are a MUST!

I’d say it’s time we embrace and say hello to FALL! Truly one of my favorite times of the years. From the changing colors of the leaves to the cool brisk in the air to everything pumpkin…it’s just a great few months to be ALIVE!

So to kick off this season, I’ve joined up with some amazing DIY and Decor bloggers to do a Fall wreath blog hop! All of their blogs are listed below, so make sure you check them all out, cause the ideas are amazing!

For my wreath, I decided I wanted to go simple, sleek and modern. I also have decided that I while I love the traditional fall colors on the trees in nature, I don’t particularly love them in my decor at home. So this year, all my fall colors will be various shades of pinks, blues and greens.

So when I set out to make this wreath, I knew that I wanted a gold hoop, like the ones you see on various macramé’s. However, I soon discovered that those larger hoops are really hard to find here in Canada and if I wanted one, I would have to order it online. Because I didn’t have enough time to do that, I decided to get creative and see what I could find at the thrift store! I hadn’t originally planned for this wreath to be somewhat upcycled, but it ended up being that way out of necessity!

I found a lamp shade for $4.99 that was the PERFECT size! I could tell that the bottom was a gold(ish) hoop and I knew I could deconstruct it and use it as my base for the wreath.

Next, I found a few fall picks from Michael’s made with the most gorgeous faux flowers and little pumpkins. Typically, when I make a wreath, I will use loose floral stems and make the floral arrangement myself. But these picks were SO beautiful and they were also buy one, get one free, so I couldn’t resist!

Finally, I added in a couple of tassels that I found, also buy one, get one free and we have all the fixings for a beautiful wreath!

So let me quickly walk you through how I made it (there will also be a YouTube video coming up soon so stay tuned!)

First, I had to dismantle the lamp shade and free the gold hoop. This process was relatively easy, however, I did find that the hoop was covered in old, dried up glue. So I took a butter knife and chipped away at the glue as best as I could. I still found that it wasn’t as smooth as I wanted it to look, so in a last minute decision, I grabbed some gold and white striped washi tape that I had and wrapped the hoop in the tape. This gives it a bit of rustic charm and hides all the imperfections. Win win!

Next, I hot glued the tassels into place, making sure one was longer than the other. I decided that I wanted them off set, so I placed them further to one side, rather than in the middle of the hoop.

After that, I laid out the faux floral picks on the hoop to make sure they were placed where I wanted them. I used a thin floral wire to attach them to the hoop and that was it!

The entire project took me less then 15 minutes to complete and cost about $30! Pretty good for a gorgeous and modern looking fall wreath!

Here is the completed look, hanging on our front door!
